The idea for an Afro-Jazz Project came to me over five years ago and has been maturing ever since. Three years ago, while I was a guest at the German Jazz Festival and European Jazz Festival in Bremen, Germany, I started looking for partners who could host and support my project in a truly professional environment. Novanoïs offered just that and became the venue for the first edition of Afro-Jazz, which takes place in September 2011. In the longer term we would like Afro-Jazz to appear not only at Novanoïs, but at many other venues to increase our exposure and give our talented musicians the audience they deserve.
Following this first edition, we will put together a catalogue, to be distributed throughout Europe and beyond. Negotiations are under way and look promising.
Afro-Jazz is a colourful and enchanting project that deserves your support. Make sure you don’t miss it!
Because Novanoïs is the place for musicmakers, there will be an opportunity for other musicians to Jam with the quartet members after the concert.Ben Ngabo (Promoter)

Maurice’s sound is a melting pot of melodies and grooves worthy of his remarkable and deep-rooted heritage. Maurice was born in Kinshasa in 1962. His father was from ‘Kin’, his mother from ‘Brazza’. Both were amateur musicians, so he had music rushing through his veins from the moment he was born. When Maurice was 7 years old, the family moved to Brussels, where he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles from Africa, Europe, America and the Caribbean. When he started to play the piano and the guitar, his talent became immediately obvious. At 17 he was already playing in a number of Belgian bands. Later he moved to Paris, where played with some big names, including Papa Wemba, Zaïko Langa Langa and Amina, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in the 1990s. As a result he went on a worldwide concert tour. He lived in the US for a few years, where he rubbed shoulders with yet more big names, namely Stevie Wonder and Lenny Cravitz, with whom he worked on a number of projects. Today he is producer and arranger for various international musicians. He is currently doing studio work in Brussels for a number of personal projects, including the Afro-Jazz Quartet.
